Hi friends,

I am new here biggrin.gif

I have a plan to move to Dresden to do some research at TUD. However, I have heard about violence, crimes in Dresden. So, I just would like to ask from you guys who live there. Is it true about this ?

I would like to make sure about this issue because our family is asian. So, moving to a new place and knowing about this kind of things make me so worried sad.gif

I have also heard about foreign-unfriendliness, but that's OK. I just would to be sure everyday I go to work that my family can live there safely.

I hope you all understand me smile.gif

Also, regarding quality of life, is Dresden considered as such a city of good life ?

Best regards and thank you so much all,

DYL

You might want to get ahold of this woman via her blog. She's American, lives with her family in Dresden, maybe knows some more locals / Asian expats - who knows?

There definitely are places in eastern Germany where violence against minorities has been a problem. Some out-of-the-way places have been declared so-called nationally liberated zones by the far right knuckle-draggers who seem to dominate in some areas. You can get info (in German) here on a blog that keeps track of the far-right party NPD if you think it'll help.

Despite all that Dresden itself is beautiful, definitely worth exploring as a place to live.

Lovelemon, I have lived in Dresden for a year. It's my first time living in a city, and it was a perfect choice because it is so safe. ( I didn't know that before I came.) I have been told that there are sections Dresden that are not safe, but I lived in Striesen last year, and just moved to Neustadt. Neustadt has some sketchy looking punks that hang out on Alaunstraße, but they seem harmless and just seem to take up space on the sidewalks sometime. I've ridden the trams alone at night and I have never felt uncomfortable. Maybe it's just the area downtown, but I don't think so. I work with a lot of Expats and I haven't heard of any crimes within my community. Just my opinion.

Hey,

i don't know if you've moved to Dresden already. :-) A coworker of mine happens to be from Thailand. Maybe you guys can meet?

I like Dresden. It is not the most international town I've been to, but it has gotten better since the first day I arrived (in 2004). Food and international community is all right especially if you are with TU-dresden or Infineon/Qimonda. I wouldn't be so concerned about safety. In fact, this is one of the safest cities I've lived in. Of course you can't count on an average Dresdener to know that much about Asian cultuer. Starring is also common. But these are generally small annoyances and you will be soon over it.

The punks are actually more "left" than "right," surprisingly. they are not at all targeting the foreigners. I haven't met a neoNazi, so I am not sure how to identify them. People in Germany do drink more publicly than people in Asia or America. And they do tend to get drunk in weekends ... and walk around drunk... singing... shouting.. But they are generally harmless. Okay. drunk people can do harm unintentionally... But you get my point. :-)

That been said, I, myself, would probably want to move somewhere at some point in the future. I prefer a more international environment. But it has been a very good experience and I do not regret coming here at all.

Plan to learn German though. It would make you happier and your life better if you speak the language.

:-) let me know if you need any help!
