Würzburg University looking for pot-head drivers

The Interdisciplinary Center for Traffic Studies in Würzburg is compiling a study together with thirty other institutes in nineteen countries regarding drug users and their behavior in everyday traffic situations. Don’t think, however, that these guys will be handing out freebies and observing you after consumption: They want self-professed users who also drive in everyday traffic. The guinea pigs will be supplied with a BlackBerry and receive daily questionnaires for a period of four weeks to fill in regarding their drug consumption in the past 24 hours and their traffic patterns.

The study’s intent is to evaluate drug usage and responsibility of car drivers. The background of the study lies in German and other legislation: There is no limit for drug users comparable to the – in Germany 0.05% - limit on blood alcohol – if you have drugs in your system you’re screwed regardless of how much you consumed and/or when. The scientists want to know which period of time generally lies between consumption and driving, the amount of drugs consumed and the participants' ability to behave responsibly in traffic situations.

Participants will receive €300 for their efforts. Any material gathered in this context will not be passed on to the police and public prosecution offices, the university assures.

Until the police arrest the university people for aiding and abetting a crime.

There was a study done in the US during the 70's (iirc) that pitted drunks against stoners. A controlled course was used and drivers from each group were administered some of each drug before driving the course. After several passes, the people drinking alcohol were all over the place, running over cones, missing turns, etc. The people smoking weed were driving about 25% slower by the end of the test, but were still successfully navigating the course. It will be interesting to see what results/conclusions are reached by this new study.

Easy: Anyone sticking to the speed limit in Germany must be stoned. Go directly to jail.

Shouldn't they really be given food vouchers?
