Inspired brands of juice at Lidl

Like a party in your mouth

Being carless I do my shopping using public transport or on foot with my faithful little trolley trundlin' along behind me. Luckily, I have Norma, Penny, Lidl and Aldi within easy walking distance and get my basic foods there, saving the cents for fancy stuff elsewhere. A few weeks ago I ran out of my Pfanner Eistee (cherry or forest berries, both very good) so I decided to stack up at Lidl. Lo and behold, what did I find there but apple-pineapple-mango juice, apple-rhubarb-peach juice and apple-pumpkin-peach-carrot juice. Some food designer seems to have had a brainwave - or s/he got tired of apple juice, orange juice, sour cherry juice or peach-passion fruit juice that have dominated German supermarket shelves for decades. Unaccustomed as these flavors sound, they are scrumptious.

These Lidl juices really hit the spot, they are tangy, not too sweet and even strong enough to take some diluting. The apple-pineapple-mango makes a decent longdrink when you add crushed ice and the spirit of your choice.

Do you have a commission agreement with Lidl then?

Peach and banana at Plus is worth a go and their basic grapefruit is FABULOUS!
Showem
I can't quite read the labels in the picture, but it looks like they say "nektar", not saft. Some nektars can have really high juice contents, but they aren't 100% juice. Some are loaded, and I do mean loaded, with natural and artificial sugars. Worth taking a look at the label, but I can easily believe they are tasty.

I just saw 'Like a party in your mouth' and thought we were in for another pop rocks conversation.

Showem, as these are the Linessa (diet) line, I would assume they are probably loaded with artificial sweeteners (not sugar) as they are probably (relatively) low-calorie. Haven't seen them at Lidl here yet (but haven't looked either), so this is just an educated guess.

I'm a big juice/fruit punch fan myself, and have found the selection here in Germany to be quite varied and good; not overly sweetened, but not watery like the "new age" stuff one sees at Pret a Manger in the UK. Passion fruit blends, kiwi stuff, it's all good.

I'll give the Lidl ones a try.

On the soda side, I've actually become quite fond of the red Hollunder Bionade. I don't drink much liquor myself, but one day I made a German Cape Codder and it was delicious. I haven't thought up a name yet, but had better hurry up as they're about to start importing it into the States, after which someone will come with a name in about five seconds.

Edit: Bionade is trying to get a jump on the cocktail naming.

I miss juice. Diabetic as of one year... no juice for me! That tells you how much sugar is in it. wink.gif

Are you a Myles na gCopaleen - Catechism of Cliché fan by any chance?

Not being diabetic myself I didn't look. "In 100 ml 6g of sugar were replaced with fructose and sweetener." The sweetener being "Natriumcylcamat" and "Saccharin-Natrium", something I didn't even find on the web.

@ Pas - You, sir, have a dirty mind. I am honored to call you my friend.

I was thinking about the tongue sensation before I even saw the above comments.
Sorry. I'm common and cheap. biggrin.gif

I've been experimenting with my limited means. The apple-peach-rhubarb drink, while almost too sweet on its own, is absolutely wicked with a shot of Lufthansa orange-apricot liqueur!

Sara, are these juices 100% fruit juices or "Nektar" where they add sugar and water to fruit juice or are they more like a squash?

They don't say Nektar anywhere so I assume that they are straightforward juice.

According to this http://www.lidl-linessa.de/getraenke.php?se=7 they are only 35% juice. (Sorry to be such a downer - just wanted to help!)
