Was just thinking about snowy stuff, and checked on the Ischgl website for their opening gig here:
http://www.ischgl.com/en-events-top_of_the...oncert-56.shtmlFor those unaware, Ischgl has reputation as a #1 party town for skiing and boarding. I have been to season opening weekends in Zell am See and they can be quite lively - and you get
people coming ONLY for the party...I have chatted to a few that can't ski etc but just go for the fun.
Just a kinda heads up to see if this floats anyone's boat. Not sure I can actually get a "pass" myself, but thought I would shout it up for those of us awaiting the snow.

I hear the beautiful sound of fresh ice on sharpened steel...
I fell the "armeisen" in my leg as I carve low and fast...
Time to start the Schigymnastik. Hup hup.
Anybody thinking about going skiing weekend after next?

Is that 29th and 30th? or do you mean later. I'm up if 29th and you don't mind me riding the gay tray. Is there any snow yet?

Riding the gay train? If your up for sharing my car I am gonna go to Staubia this weekend...not sure which day yet though, but my colleague was there the other weekend and said it was good.

Do you mean the Stubai Glacier? Must admit I normally dodge the glaciers and just wait for the real stuff to turn up. And whilst this thread is alive if anyone reading likes riding during the week (to dodge the great unwashed), shout me up.

Forget going to Stubai this weekend - it will be a white out up there, and seriously cold. We're going to get hammered with snow the whole weekend - even here in Munich.
Weekend after next will be the time to hit the slopes (or midweek if you can swing it).

@Hutcho: They're talking about the weekend after next.
I'm driving that weekend with buddies. 29th-30th We're considering between Hintertux Glacier and Stubai. We've been boarding last week at Hintertux b/c they had better conditions. Was OK. Snowing now and the entire weekend. Some of the 'non-glaciers' are supposed to open this weekend.
www.zillertal.at - good page to check for news, conditions, and accommodation.

We are off to Sölden 29/30 weekend and I am optimistic for good conditions.
I think Ischgl is a great powder place but I am weary of it out of main season. We are off to Ischgl first weekend in January
Wooo Hooo for winter
If it snows like promised this weekend, Ischgl should be perfect.
Hoping to go to St Anton for Nov 29-30, can't wait

You might be right with Ischgl. They are one of the early non-glaciers. The opening party is huge.
Stubai 90cm, Sölden 90cm, Hintertux 135cm... maybe Pitztal (haven't checked)

After this weekend, you won't need to go to a glacier. They'll be a meter of snow about 1000m at most places.

Hmm, I want to go. Stupid lack of money ruining everything. The Stuttgart crew and the Munich crew should combime to form the ultimate Skiing group.
Yes. Work makes me type stupid things.

Hi,
I'm keen to go skiing next weekend. Was planning on getting a Bayern or a BOB ticket and heading off with a bunch of friends. Has anybody any suggestions about where will be open this coming weekend (with easy public transport access)?
The Lenggries website still says that due to revision/maintenance they won't open until the 5/12 (though last year they did open on the weekend during the maintenance period), Garmish appears to be just opening the Zugspitze (and I'd rather avoid that if possible, as it seems to take forever to get up the mountain). Any other suggestions?
Cheers
Rich

not only does it take quite a while to get up to the Zugspitze, it's also a pain in the arse if nothing else in the area is open as queues at the lifts are extremely long and it takes forever to get going (and the runs are not great either).
However, my initial look around indicates that nothing else in the immediate vicinity is open yet. Maybe if we get a good dump this week..?
If you could go further afield, Obergurgl is open. But you can't really get there by public transport.

me too! do you think it's wise to buy a helmet?
paperlapap78

20 years on ski without helmet. Two weeks ago I started snowboarding and hit my head pretty hard twice. Then I bought one and actually find it comfortable. Bring your goggles when you want to buy a helmet. I have 200 bucks Oakley googles that don't go with the new helmet now!!
you can buy them in Austria, too. There are so many sport stores in the resort areas and you'll have a larger selection.

Wooo Hooooo!
On the helmet front I too skied for years and years with no helmet but since I have been snowboarding and going off piste a lot more I have got one.
To be honest it is also come in handy for when the moomin skiers turn around with their skis hoisted on their shoulders and whack me.
Also you never know how or when you are going to fall and if there is a rock in your path you'll be glad of the helmet. Or maybe even a ski or snowboard that has gone walkies...

And to answer my question from yesterday it would appear that two of the main lifts at spitzingsee are opening this weekend (info below from the alpenplus website). I can't find any info on how much snow they actually have (other than looking at the
webcams).

Never heard of bum protection! Ok well drop me a text or something. We'll probably be found in the powder if there is any. I guess if you are all still learning maybe best to meet after in a bar or something? Say for example the fire and ice (is that what it is called or am I confusing with Ischgl?) on main street say after ski tomorrow??

Erm yes that certainly worked for me. Apparently I got off lightly learning to snowboard. But I did have to go to bed at 7pm after my first day I was that exhausted!!!

Oh well Miss PM there are bum protection pants just check online.
Burton ones look like regular shorts.
Dainese ones are in street hooker net style.
I didn't buy any though. That cheese head in the store was so so so unfriendly
Will try to get some in Soelden
hihi.. no worries. it wasn't on my mind to join you guys snowboarding.. but drinks later is a good makes the pain bearable

I don't know Sölden, but there is definitely a Fire&Ice bar in Ischgl. We'll figure sth out there.
Sounds about like my first day snowboarding two weeks ago. I was in bed real early my entire body was a piece of pain. bum, red/blue knees, arms from getting up, and I never had sore muscle in my neck before. The worst is when you change to the other edge to early. Like sth is pulling you feet away and you hit the ground.. but yeah I had it out pretty fast. Now I keep changing the angles of the bindings.
I don't know Soelden, but watch out when you go off-piste on the glacier. crevasses.
