On Saturday, 18th of October 2008, from 11:00 to 18:00, there will be a "Tag der offenen Tür (Open Door Day) at the research campus in Garching. It's a great opportunity to see what goes on in the laboratories and research institutes. Also a fun day out for older kids and wannabe scientists. Among the participating institutes are the Technical University institutes for Mathematics, Informatics, Chemistry, Physics, "Maschinenwesen" - umm, I think that's where they design fancy machines n' stuff, there's the research nuclear reactor* (Forschungs-Neutronenquelle, FRM-II), and lots of other institutes.

This time round, the Max Planck Institutes (Astrophysics, Extraterrestrial Physics, Plasma Physics, Quantum Optics) and the European Southern Observatory will not be participating, but if you're into astronomy, robots, nanotechnology or photonics, you should find something of interest at one of the interdisciplinary "Excellence Clusters".

Getting there: U-Bahn U6, "Garching-Forschungszentrum" will take you right to where it's all happening. If you go by car, take the A9 Autobahn, exit Garching-Nord, but note that parking spaces are limited. There will be a free shuttle bus service to ferry people around the campus.

Check out the Tag der offenen Tür web site (in German) for full details.

See also the threads about the events in 2006 and 2007.

*Note the special requirements if you want to visit the nuclear reactor:

QUOTE
* Minimum age of visitors: 18 years
* Valid identity card or passport required (driving licence is not enough!)
* Due to radiation protection the visit of pregnant women and nursing mothers must be denied.
* Registration for the visit is on 18.10.2008 at the information desk of the FRM II in the physics department (No. 3) (pre-registration is not possible)
* No cameras or mobile phones are allowed
* Sturdy shoes are recommended (grates!)

For the other institutes there are - to the best of my knowledge - no special requirements. Comfy shoes are a good idea in any case, because the campus is a big place and there's plenty of walking to do.

Just giving this a bump, as I expect quite a few people out there would be interested, if they only knew!
