Hello Toytown,

I, along with my girlfriend, will soon be having a baby here in Munich but unfortunately we are only on page two of our 'Learn German' course.

Does anyone know if there's a possibility to get antenatal classes here in English?

Thanks.

Can't help much with the classes - I skipped them for my first one, and was too busy for my second one. However, I do have two recommendations:
  • Under the state scheme you are entitled to get midwife treatment now - go for it. I forgot about that one both times and had a hard time finding one for after the birth.
  • Start looking at birthing clinics now. I have yet to hear something bad about the Geisenhofer Klinik near the Chinese Tower.
good luck!

If you're looking for a Lamaze class and have no luck, there's one on DVD. It's NTSC though, so you've got to have an NTSC capable region code free (or one) player.

My wife really wanted to go to the Geisenhofer klinik, but we had moved to far away at that time. Excellent place. She did have most all of her ultrasounds done there or in her doctor's office.

Dadtobe you can try Ester Hölzemann, she runs her own classes, in English, she was UK trained. I went to her when I had my first child, the classes are not too big (4 - 5 couples) and you can also have her after birth too. Her telephone numbers are 0170 2108675 and 089 67989285.

I also went to Ester Hölzemann's class; I would highly recommend it.

Thanks for the info, you are a very helpful group of people.

...how many mole-hills in the Englischer Garten - unglaublich!!!

I'd recommend trying to have a home birth instead of going to a clinc, provided there aren't any problems during the pregancy.

Hey. I thought I saw this topic before, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm due in late April, and I'm signing up for a birthing class through the Frauenklinik vom Roten Kreuz. The class will be taught in German, and I'm concerned that I'll miss a lot of important information. I remember seeing a previous post with contact information for a birthing classes in English. Does anyone still have that information? I can't find it. It will be impossible for me to master German before this birth, so I want to focus on learning important words related to birthing. I'm hoping an English birthing class might be able to help me with this too. Anyone know of one?

Here are two places offering English language childbirth classes.

The first is with Midwife Esther Hölzemann - mentioned elsewhere in these forums. Classes are at the Mütterzentrum: http://www.muetterzentrum-ramersdorf.de/
Click on the link for "Kurse." These are generally 6 partner classes, over 6 weeks.

The second is with Lynn Jablonski at the Beratungstelle für Natürliche Geburts und Elternsein. http://www.natuerliche-geburt.de/vorgeburt3.html
If you scroll all the way to the bottom of this page, you'll find the information for English courses. Or, from main menu, follow the links for "Vor der Geburt" and then "Geburtsvorbereitung".
These classes are either private or offered for one Saturday each month.

The search function is your friend: Birthing classes in Munich and taught in English.

I recommend the Natuerliche Geburt course mentioned above. Lynn was not our instructor (unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the woman who was), but I had been doing a lot of reading on my own and didn't feel it was necessary to go two hours weekly for 6 weeks. One, three-hour meeting was plenty for us. The meeting was held near Goetheplatz and cost 80 Euro.

I have an american midwife and she holds Geburtsvorbereitung classes in English at Dritter Orden. If you search for her posts (SallyF) you should find her, or just send a PM.

Hi

I've been trying to contact Esther Hölzemann by phone with no success, does anyone have email contact for her. I would like to sign up for the childbirth classes at mutterzentrum ramersdorf. I see the next course is starting in July, but not due til December but don't want to miss out on getting signed up for the next course.

Any ideas how to get hold of her?

cheers
Jozi
I have a phone number for her but she is away on vacation till 13 July. I sent an email to her centre and they replied that they have forwarded the mail to her but not to expect a reply till she is back. I am also hoping to join the class that starts on 15 July as I am due in November. The number I have is 0170 2108675. I even called the number of her colleague as per her voicemail message but there was no answer and no call back to me. Guess waiting till the 13th is pretty much it then. Let me know if you have better luck.

I signed up for a one day intensive course on Aug 10 with Lynne Jablonski. You can call her at 08121-41380. I think she still has some spaces left.

What kind of class is this?

My wife and I attended Lynn Jablonski's 1 day class at the Geburtshilfe center near Goetheplatz.

We were disappointed to find out later that the course was not covered by our public heath insurance as Ms. Jablonski is not a registered mid-wife.
