A while back I bought a large original oil painting by a kind of known artist whose name escapes me now, it's not a grand master or anything as such, has no place in the Neue Pinakotek, but I paid decent money for it (a few thousand DM) and now would like to sell it. Does anyone know where I could get it valued and sold?
The only place I can think of is the auktionshaus on Viktualienmarkt but they seem good at bashing things through cheaply and quickly. Anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Try Neumeister or Hampel auction houses.

Hi there,
If you can find a name, and maybe a date I can try finding out something about it for you from some art dealers i know. they would be a good bet, especially if the artist is dead. What style is it, is it in good condition, framed etc.

Easier said than done, but do a bit of research online first. Dealers' prices tend to fluctuate a bit depending on what's in at the moment, so it may help you to know the prices of the artist's other work in the recent past. You could get a nice surprise if your artist happens to be in right now.

Definately not ebay.
If the painting is indeed of art historical interest, then you are not going to get the right buyers on ebay. There is a high risk of selling it way to cheap.
Be careful.

Thanks for the replies. I wouldn't go so far as to say the painting is of historical interest and sadly (for me, but less for her) I'm pretty sure the artist is still alive, but it is 'art' rather than a 1000 off print job and I'd like to make sure I sell it for what it's worth. I'll try to put the details together and post back.

They don't have to be dead to be hot and pricey.
