A German referee has resigned amongst allegations of max-fixing. Read more in this article.

Does this happen more than we think in football? There have definately been some dodgy decisions in important matches.

Marsielle were kicked down to their lowest league and stripped of a European Cup title in the 90's when it was found they had bribed a ref in the 80's. They beat Nottingham Forest in the semis(I think), during the match a lot of dubious decisions were made including a penalty.

I think it does happen, but probably not as widespread.

The ref during the World Cup in 2002 that officiated the S.Korea v Italy game gave some very questionable/laughable decisions to the Koreans, people put it down to just one of those things in football that happens.

The same ref was suspended a couple of months later after a match between two asian teams(One called Barcelona!?) - Barcelona were losing by 4 goals. The referee added 15 minutes of injury time and awarded 2 penalties to Barcalona. Barcelona made up he deficit and won the game!!

I think you're referring to Anderlecht which ended up admitting having "lent" 1M Belgian Francs (or about €25000 in today's money) to the Spanish referee of the match in question. The latter ended up getting killed in a mysterious car crash a couple of years later too.

Marseille were sent down for match-fixing also, but everything revolved around a little-known player for Valenciennes (Jean-Philippe Glassman, IIRC) who ratted them out for having attempted to bribe him to lose a game.

No problem.

This Glassmann guy's career was ruined by this incident by the way.

So let me get this straight. Even with a bent ref they needed 15 minutes of extra time and 2 penalties to beat the other side...

I think you have to have a measure of symphathy for the ref here, I mean there he is bending and breaking the rules so the other side win and they still cant keep the ball out of their own goal or manage to put it in the other end.

Boy, must have been red faces there when they realised wink.gif

@paul

larf. the least they could do is actually try and win the game!

weren't leeds in a european final back in the 70's against ac milan when they got robbed? the ref got suspended or maybe even banned a few years later
