So how was the game? Must confess the snow last week and the weather forecast in Tirol persuaded me.
For the die-hard skiers/snowboarders, Kitzbühl was amazing. It got sunny at 10 for the rest of the day. Especially from 10 until 1, the snow was great for carving and I got one *perfect* carve (chest almost touching the ground, hand brushing the snow before kicking over to the backside). Maybe in 2 weeks I will try for Hochfuegen.
So, to make this post Ultimate-relevant: will we play on Wednesday?

The grey ass soup kept a lot of people away so there were only 5 of us. We played a 3 on 2 game on a small pitch with one person just switching offense for each team. It was good, nice playing temps and on and off light rain.
Dunno about Wed, what's the forecast like? If it's nice I'm down...

Tomasino, yeah I practiced twice with Mir San Mir. They are as close to professional as there is in the sport of Ultimate, they win a lot of European championship tourneys. WAY out of my league, I felt like a hopeless beginner. (edit, and I've played Ultimate for 12 years on college and pickup teams)
Asking if the TT group wants to play with them is almost comical. It's like asking if a bunch of guys who play weekend pickup basketball ever practice with the Boston Celtics. :-)

P.S. Wednesday looks like a no-go for me after all, due to the soggy condition the Garten will be in after a full day of snow. Unless there is some kind of weather miracle and it's not a sodden mess :/

It's almost freezing outside and still snowing up here in the icy plains of north
Schwabing.
I don't think anyone will be up for playing this evening. Including me.
On the upside, the temperature for the weekend at least is looking more positive.
The plan is to play at
Giselastrasse at 14:00 on Sunday 16.04. I'll post again before then to comment on what the weather's doing.

The weather forecast for tomorrow has been gradually getting better.
I know a lot of people are away this weekend - can we get a quick headcheck?
Who plans on coming along tomorrow at 14:00?

Nice one, both of you!
I know mrbrain won't let us down either, so that's four down already.
I'll bring one frisbee and the cones, meeting at
2pm in the English Garden nr. Giselastr. as ever!
Anyone else who likes the idea of throwing a frisbee around in the park on a Sunday, give it a try this week.
Newcomers very welcome and we don't bite!
I'll be there tomorrow, will also bring a disk.

Wicked game today, lads.
Our reward for bearing out the few spots of rain was an otherwise pleasant and sunny afternoon (albeit a little bit windy

).
A question: My frisbee now has a split down the side, so I'm going to order a new one.
Anyone interested in buying a disc and sharing the postage?
Last year we clubbed together and the discs cost about 8-9EUR each as I remember.

Does that place do golf discs too?
Glad to hear you had a good session. Had a lovely time in the mountains, but I must say the snow was rubbish. Serves me right for going in April...

Apr 16 2006, 8:11 pm
yeah good question- are you getting discs or frisbees or both?
jayhay
Apr 16 2006, 9:32 pm
Good question.
This webshop (Flymart.de) offers both types of discs at really good prices (Discraft ultimate discs for EUR11).
It's also run by a friend of disc-golf-Philip, so we'll be keeping it in the family.
If people let me know what they want I'd be happy to write to him directly and ask for a club discount.
Who's interested?
(I'm guessing brokenm will be interested in buying a new one, because a dog mauled his last week

)

i'll check out the site later tonight or tomo. but i might be interested in 1 or 2 disks. let you know after i check it out.

I would probably go for some discs. Been meaning to get some for golf, and my only two Ultimate discs are now about ten years old (and one has a small crack from being pulled into a tree or something at Weilheim).

I'm meeting brokenm at the usual spot for a throwaround at 16:30 this afternoon. Anyone's welcome.

Ooh, just saw that you're throwing, will be over shortly...

hey Jay! I guess it's time I owned one of them frisbee things myself. You guys were sucessfull inflecting this thing on me

I am up for splitting whatever shipping costs. Just get me a good disk, nothing too fancy and nothing too crappy either, you know. If there is a link you can send me that I can pick my own color or whatever that would also be cool..
oh! and one more thing, I was thinking about investing on some proper shoes after the last game. I am feeling the gym shoes are really not doing the trick, especially on wet grass.. would appriciate any advice about the shoes..
see you fellas on sunday

Stilts work great and gives you a height advantage as well.

Apr 18 2006, 10:22 am
regarding shoes...
I've got some 'outdoorsie' trainers (in the UK they're called 'approach shoes' in the climbing fraternity) which do very well when the ground is dry. When it's wet I have a pair of football boots which I bought in the states on special offer. They even have an air sole, which seems to do little to aid my vertical take off attempts but makes an amusing noise in the rain.
I had some problems with my knees and ankles last year, which stopped when I took off the cleats (studs in UK english) and switched back to trainers. The conclusion I came to was that cleats give you too much grip in harder ground, or at least they do when you're my size. Possibly this year my knees will be stronger, and I'll wear cleats all season. We'll see.
borracuda
Apr 18 2006, 10:32 am
thanks for the advice ben. I guess I will go for simple football shoes with cleats.
nice shoes brokenm! I would like to see you go deep with them!
brokenm
Apr 18 2006, 10:54 am
They are not great for lateral movement...but with these I can actually out jump Ben's height. I also agree with Ben's assessment. I have a pair of cleats and I think that they grab too well, resulting in a chance for injury. I would suggest looking for shoes with heavy tread or short spikes, than actual cleats.

@ Bora -
Here's the link to the shop again (Flymart.de). For ultimate you'll want a 175g
Discraft Ultrastar disc for EUR11.
On the subject of cleats: I can see how they would drastically increase the stress on the ankle. They certainly make a massive differece in turn of quick changes in direction and stopping/starting suddenly. I'm wicked psyched about mine ...
The ultimate meetup on Wednesday will be (as ever) in the English Garden across from U-Giselastr. at 18:00.Everyone and anyone is welcome. We are nice guys. And we don't take it too seriously

Apr 18 2006, 3:12 pm
@ Jaythe frisbees look all right to me. I will get the red one (not the orange one that is!

and of course if it doesn't cost extra 4 bucks.. the description is not that clear, red is not mentioned but you can see it on the little pic. there)
My second choice is the white, but please no green or orange

So we wait a little longer if anyone else wants in..

Apr 18 2006, 6:15 pm
I would say the map is really helpful. (The above one)
You just need to get off the
U-Bahn at
Giselastr. and start walking on Martiusstr. towards the Gardens.
Don't turn right or left just follow the street.. (Thiemestr. as well)
You should see the guys throwing frisbee around in the opening ahead of you

Bob, in the nicest possible way... print the map out, get yourself to
Giselastrasse U6 station, leave the station at the North end, turn right, follow the map. Look for yellow cones. If you're desperate then drop me a PM and you can have my mobile number for if you get lost.

I don't want to get a reputation as a weather obsessive, but the forecast for this evening is great!
According to

An ample reward for a days worth of office drudgery methinks.

Yep... I can verify that about the cleats. Let's see, when have I sprained my right ankle:
Age 13, playing speedball on a rough field in normal shoes
Age 16, running cross country, up a hill on a rocky trail
Age 20, playing Ultimate on a hard field using cleats
Age 25, playing Ultimate on a rough field using cleats
Age 29, playing Ultimate in the Garten using cleats
If you ever sprained one before, wear a brace on it when you use cleats (I have a nice one that laces up). DON'T try to change direction too fast... that is how I popped it all three times!
That said, I recommend the cleats with the longest, most grippy spikes available. You will be an Ultimate star! ;-)
