I hope no one was struck by lightning!

@Mandy -- get better soon.
benpanter
Sorry to hear that Mandy - hope you get better soon. You shouldn't let it affect your beer garden attendance after the sessions though...
robin13
I had a lot of fun in the rain-storm on Wednesday, just sorry I came a bit late...

For anyone interested, my last home-team Erlangen is hosting a tournament in September. It's going to be a "fun" tournament, so any level of play may apply (though usual game rules regarding end-zone, travel, stall-count etc. will apply). I think you're good enough for it - if you're interested!

Erlangen is about 1.5 hours drive to the North (just north of Nuremberg). The tournament will be Saturday and Sunday. Camping next to the pitch. Showers and toilets in adjacent sports center. Otherwise usual tournament setup.

Have a look, and if you're up for it, send an email to Erik (address on the website) to apply. If anyone wants to work on their technique or tactic in preperation for that, or otherwise, I can do some training with you as warm up to games on Wednesdays.

Anyway... here's the link!
drw
We need to agree on a time for the next game. I'm going to second Ben's suggestion (using authoritative, bold font): Sunday, 4pm.
At Dietlindenstrasse, of course. Since this is a big time change, please tell those who don't check this thread.
Weenskii
Just a note on the weather: tomorrow's going to be a scorcher! cool.gif We're looking at 32°C / 91°F and sunny, so bring lots of water! See you at 4
tsquare
Going to lie about in the sun beforehand from about 1pm at Giselestr. if anyone wants to join. 01622542773 if you can't find us.
TCH
Good game today, even though it was pretty slow because of the heat. For those that took a dip or two in the river, that was as refreshing as always.

Whoever left this pair of shoes at the beer garden, I have them and will bring them Wed. PM me if you need/want them before then.

SOB
as I sit here at the computer I see its still quite light out, will you guys still be playing at like 8ish tomorrow night... I can make it around 8 and want to play cause I havent in so long, so better question, will anyone stick around and play till it gets to dark to see the disc anymore???
drw
@TCH: The shoes are mine. Thanks for rescuing them from the beer garden.

The weather forecast calls for showers or storms, but it's just supposed to be mostly overcast from late afternoon on. Barring a rain-out, the next game will be Wednesday at 6pm at Giselastrasse.
mere
@SOB- i'm prob going to Curry night, but will leave earlier than norm if you don't have anyone to through around with. just let me know and i'll bring a disc with me and meet you since it's still lightish until 930-10
drw
@SOB: Last summer, I remember games that went until 9. So far this year, games have been ending at more like 8, I think, but if the ground isn't too wet tomorrow, I would certainly be willing to play for an extra hour or so.

I can't make it tonight at normal time either, but would love to throw a frisbee around a bit later if its not pouring down with rain.
one51
I probably won't make it unless weather is stunning. Have to work late.

Was anyone interested in ordering frisbees? I will get 2, one white and one yellow, from whatever frisbee webpage has stock. Price probably 13-15 eur per disc (hope I get a bit of discount for multi-disc-order like Jay's last one).
robin13
I can very heartily reccomend these discs, which are raising money for a good cause, are discraft, and only 10EUR (if you can wait that long...), or you could see if Flo from Wegwerfgeselschaft still has some of their team discs - also Discraft, in neon-yellow or white for 8EUR. They've a real cool design too. smile.gif Most teams sell their team discs at their tournaments for ~10EUR too.
... or you could go to some high-street store or online shop and get yourself an "inferior" Eurodisc for >=14EUR ... unsure.gif
MandyNY
I have to bail on bee tonight for the Flaming Lips...Have fun guys!!-M
Weenskii
I would absolutely be in as well, but I've got a paper to work on unfortunately..

Also the way the weather's shaping up I'd say you have a chance for a good, hard, long game today. I'll be there rain or shine on sunday. Bis dann
benpanter
Evening from Leiden folks... hope you had a good game tonight and the latecomers managed to play. I'm back for Sunday's game which will be at 4pm at the Dietlindenstrasse location. Everybody welcome, esp. beginners, and hopefully it won't clash with any football games. Should be pleasantly cool too...

If you've never played before and fancy trying, there is a map in the first post of this thread. If it is your first time please try to arrive on time as it gives us time to help you learn the game before the game starts.
tutti
In case you dont know anything about ultimate frisbee: dont show up wearing flipflops tongue.gif . Like ME!!!. I'll promise next time I'll wear the proper outfit. Besides from the fact that I didn't play, I had a great time.
one51
AND, besides wearing good shoes for running: BRING WATER! It's getting hot, and if you don't have any you will start dehydrating fast. I just switched from bringing one bottle (when weather is cool) to bringing two bottles, because I always finish the first one with the heat.
jayhay
Fun game last night, nice to be back playing again.
Have to agree with what One51 said about bringing water. Even if you're playing for the first time and taking it easy, you'll sweat a litre or two out at least.

ASIDES: If anyone's interested in an outing to Weilheim to play disc golf on the 8th/9th July, check out my post in the disc golf thread.

That was a great game last night. Perfect weather, a few new people and lots of fun! See you Sunday.
TCH
Have to second that about a great game last night. In the beergarden we started talking about fouls since it seemed that a lot of them were being called yesterday.

The last point on this page discusses how it works - hopefully we can clarify how we want to deal with fouls on Sunday... wink.gif Non-contact (fouls)

Cheers to those of you who stayed at the Turm so that I could have another beer biggrin.gif

And from the same site, here's the more complete UPA rules regarding fouls:

QUOTE
XVI. FOULS

1. Fouls are the result of physical contact between opposing players.
A foul can only be called by the player who has been fouled and
must be announced by calling out the word "Foul!" loudly
immediately after the foul has occurred.

2. The player initiating contact is guilty of a foul.

3. Throwing Fouls:

A. A throwing foul may be called when there is contact between
the thrower and the marker.

B. Contact occurring during the follow through (after the disc
has been released) is not sufficient grounds for a foul, but
should still be avoided whenever possible.

C. When a foul is committed by a thrower or the marker, play
stops and possession reverts back to the thrower after a
check.

D. If the thrower is fouled in the act of throwing and the pass
is completed, the foul is automatically declined and play
continues without interruption.

E. If the marker is fouled in the act of throwing and the pass is
not completed, play continues without interruption.

4. Catching Fouls:

A. A catching foul may be called when there is contact between
opposing players in the process of attempting a catch,
interception, or knock down. A certain amount of incidental
contact during or immediately after the catching attempt is
often unavoidable and is not a foul.

B. If a player contacts an opponent before the disc arrives and
thereby interferes with that opponent's attempt to make a play
on the disc, that player has committed a foul.

C. If a player's attempt to make a play on the disc causes
significant impact with a legitimately positioned stationary
opponent, before or after the disc arrives, it is considered
"harmful endangerment" and is a foul.

D. Dangerous, aggressive behavior or reckless disregard for the
safety of fellow players is always a foul.

E. If a catching foul occurs and is uncontested, the player
fouled gains possession at the point of the infraction. If
the call is disputed, the disc goes back to the thrower. If
an uncontested foul (with the exception of a force-out foul
[XV-9]) occurs in the end zone, the player fouled gains
possession at the closest point on the goal line to the
infraction.

OK... weather looks perfect for Ultimate today! As mentioned earlier in the thread, we'll be playing at Dietlindenstrasse at 4pm.

If anyone is unsure of how to get to the place, I'll be leaving from the Dietlindenstrasse U6 station at ~15:39. If you'd like to join me, I'll be at the top of the steps at the South end of the station (direction town centre), opposite the petrol station, carrying a red bag with a purple disc stuck on the back. I'm also very tall. Drop me a PM/reply here if you want to join, and be there by 15:40 as I won't be sticking around!
bob_the_scutter
how come its 4 and not 2? Or is just a bit too hot earlier in the day?
Wizadora
I've been caught out again by the time change!! I've got to go and see a flat at 5 so I'm going to need to miss it again, I may pop by to have a half hour run around depending on how long it takes. Oh well next time!! sad.gif
hezamarie
We won't be out today because Hungarian wine beckons, but you all have fun.

I hope to see you all on Wednesday.
benpanter
Yeup, 4pm because it's just too damn hot to play properly at 2pm. We did the 4pm timeslot all last summer: it worked very well as you can actually do other things too rather than devote the whole day to Ultimate. Time for this week in particular was announced on Wednesday...
TCH
@benpanter - perhaps you can change the first post to include the times for the summer, now that we've generally decided for 6pm on Wed at Giselastrasse and 4pm Sundays at Dietlindenstrasse ?

Looks great today - looking forward to a fun game! wink.gif
drw
I am sitting out today's game due to a slightly pulled muscle, but I will be going to the Long Night of Sports thing (at Olympiazentrum) later. If anyone is interested in meeting up, ask Akira for details or PM me.
benpanter
Wednesday's (today!) game 6pm, Giselastrasse
robin13
Looking forward to it, and a refreshing cool-down in the Eisbach after! smile.gif
mrbrain
I'm down for playing tonight. And then up to Hirschau for WM viewing. China Tower and Seehaus might be too packed.

Allons enfants de la patrie, le jour de gloire est arrivé...

Vive la France! cool.gif
benpanter
Definitly agree re: hirschau, I'm amazed that nobody goes there to watch the games in comfort!
one51
Nice game today! The 8 that stuck around for another 20 points or so played until 20:40.

Something interesting I learned, because I just bought a fancy-pants digital scale (well, the cheapest one but still DIGITAL). Well, just before Ultimate I weighed myself. After drinking about 1L of water during the game and eating 2 granola bars, I was home after a lot of sweating. I weighed myself again and it was exactly 1 kilo less than before!

1L water has a mass of 1kg.

The lesson here: I am not the sweatiest of people by any stretch... and I lost 2kg of water during 2 1/2 hours of play (probably some by exhaling as well as sweating). So bring and drink a lot of water... I will take 2L in the future tongue.gif
one51
Another thing: how much do you think we run during Ultimate? I am guessing for the average person it's about 100m per point (at least). So 16 points is about a mile of running.

If we play for about 40-50 points that's 3 miles... and I bet that's the least amount of points we play on a short session.
robin13
I'm about as tired as a 12km run... but it's a very different type of load-cycle. Maybe next week I'll bring my GPS and wear it on my shoulder for a game! ;-P
mrbrain
I suggest that for this Sunday we meet up at 2:00. Here's my reasoning -- when we play at 4, we usually end around 6, and after a quick dip in the Isar, that puts in the beer garden at 6:30 maybe even 7 depending on how long we play. That only gives us an hour buffer for the final that kicks-off at 8:00. If we meet at 2:00 we'll have more flexibility. I want to make sure we can secure seating near the front of the screen in the Hirschau, and I'm sure it will be more crowded than Wednesday's semi-final. What do people think?

Those who want to play later can always come later as along as we send over a large group to the beer garden to secure tables at an appropriate hour.

Herr Brain
eriiki tubbs
Sounds like a plan, I'm all for it.
benpanter
Ermmm... The final starts at 9pm (UK website times are an hour behind us). If we play at 4pm we'll be in the beer garden at 6, with three hours to kill before the match. If we start at 2pm we'll be drinking for five hours before the match starts. I don't think we've ever played for more than two hours, one and a half being the norm.

My vote still goes for 4pm, but I'll take the majority opinion sometime this afternoon.
mrbrain
On the FIFA website it says 20:00. I know all the other late games were at 21:00 but for the final they moved it down an hour. Unless there is an hour of closing ceremonies or something? Not sure.
eriiki tubbs
The match starts at 8 it says, and I wouldn't mind going for this Isar dip I've heard so much about after the frisbee. 2 hours of frisbee including warmup, 45 minutes of winding down and swimming will bring us to the beergarden at 5. As Jano said, it's probably a long timekilling period for some, but we just want to secure tables for later on.
mrbrain
Actually, now that I think about it. Even if the final were at 21:00, we should think about getting to the beer garden as early as possible. This game happens once every 4 years, I'm getting a spot!!!

I have to say that the Hirschau is money for watching WM games. The quality of the projector is excellent. I'll be watching the 3rd place match there tomorrow as well if anyone is interested in joining me.
benpanter
OK - I was going from a UK website and adding the hour. The UK website was wrong...

Anyway. As I said, I'll take the majority decision here. Hot 2pm game and a long strech in the beer garden but definite good seats, or almost-as-hot-4pm game and a shorter strech in the beer garden with likely good seats. Seriously - whatever the majority wants.
benpanter
So it appears I'm a lone voice for 4pm. Nevermind, we'll play at 2pm at Dietlindenstrasse on Sunday.
one51
2pm it is! I don't think we'll be too toasty hot, since the weather says partly cloudy and chance of rain all day. I might join for the game after too.
jayhay
I'm there for frisbee at 2pm and around for the football after.
I bought some obazda and some chips to bring. If anyone has the chance
to buy a bag of pretzels, i'll chip in (Tengelmann were sold out just now).
palmbeachsporty
Add to IT techie guys from USA in the final count!
One from South Florida (me!) and the other from Hurricane ravaged Mississipi!

Look forward to meeting everyone!
Yeti
I'll be, finally, making it today. Might be 15 minutes late though.
