Street food in Berlin

Story about Imbiss culture from the NY Times

It seems Berlin is tops for Imbisse. A New York Times story published yesterday featured some of the more exotic and quality food stalls in the city:

QUOTE (NY Times)
One of the best is the W Imbiss (Kastanienallee 49; 49-30-48-49-26-57) on the stylish edge of Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg, whose logo resembles the golden arches turned upside down. If you’re lucky, Gordon W., as its Canadian chef and owner calls himself, will be in the tiny open kitchen, wearing his signature fez and manning the tandoor.

QUOTE (NY Times)
Nearby is WKD Lebensmittel in Mitte (Rochstrasse 2; 49-30-2759-6130), a small storefront that sells fresh produce, organic cheeses and German wines.

QUOTE (NY Times)
That’s also partly true at the FoodBall (Neue Schönhauser Strasse 11; 49-30-24-62-88-92), a new food stand inside the Camper shoe store, also in Mitte. As the name suggests, everything is shaped like a soccer ball, whether it’s the savory organic rice balls stuffed with wild mushrooms, chickpeas or free-range chicken, or the dessert balls made from dates or carob.

Some others are mentioned in the article, as well. I'll be stopping in to some of these places next time I'm in Berlin!

I just had my two cents- those Foodballs from the Camper store are terrible. My sister and I had them in Barcelona, and they're lousy. Yes, it's organic. Yes, there's a lot of fiber. But they're tasteless and expensive.

The best street stand in berlin in my opinion is the Fritz&Co. "pommes" stand at Wittenbergplatz! Organic pototo, the chips are freshly cooked to order and they even have real malt vinegar!

Friendly staff too.

Hmm..
I live basically right downstairs from the W Imbiss place, it's nothing to write home about in my opinion. my bf and i got pretty sick this summer from their teryaki tofu dish, both of us had it, so i know it had to be that- 2 hours later...gross sad.gif . but then again it was about 35 degrees out, so in that heat i suppose any sauce/ingredient can easily go bad, i'll give them that much i guess. we have gone back, obviously never for the same dish, the naan pizza is alright is suppose. they are always busy though.

It's a shame they took the easy route and only picked out Imbisse in Mitte and Prenzlberg.
There are so many great places in Kreuzberg, Schöneberg and Charlottenberg. And everywhere else.

My favourites: the falafel place on the corner of Winterfeldtplatz (for it's food) or the Asia Imbiss next to Wild at Heart near Görlitzer Bahnhof, in which I spent many a happy winter evening drinking Berliner Pilsner.

I miss Berlin sad.gif

Streetfood is simply awesome, but stupid health and safety laws prevent us in Europe from getting the delicious novelty meat products on offer in Asia. It's a terrible shame.

If you like falafel/shawarma (but hate those standardized, over-spiced 1€-ones), just check for "zweistrom" (Kollwitzstr./Danziger Str.; Prenzlauer Berg).

It´s fresh, stuffed with lots of good things that can be identified by their taste, it´s cheap compared to what you get...and you´ll be treated friendly wink.gif

Another place that´s great:
If you walk from Hackescher Markt towards the Synagoge, you´ll pass a little pizza parlor (right hand). They sell really good pizzas for about 1,50€. There´s always crowds waiting to get in, so this isn´t obviously just my opinion.

I used to go there all the time. Recommendation seconded.

ohmygod..the first thing i thought when i read this, was of both the times i ate at W imbiss and got sick after...considering it was a tofu/veg dish im not sure how...but i havent been so quick to go back a 3rd time..plus im not really into having my name called on a loadspeaker to collect ur food unsure.gif

my favorite places to eat here...hmmm...

there's a really awesome and cheap (claim to fame is their keeping with the D-Mark prices) is an imbiss at the south end of U-bahnhof Alt-Mariendorf across the street from the Eis Hennig Ice Cream shop.

And at the south end of U-Bahnhof Westphalweg there's a döner stand there - its the only place where i dare eat a döner at! i think they really make 'em with love!

i cant say i really fancy any italian restaurants here, they all taste the same to me, somehow. cant seem to go wrong with the so-called "mexican restaurants" though. and the chinese places all seem the same to me, too.

as far as spending a couple of extra bucks to go eat and wanting a really, really good hamburger...i highly recommend "Tim's Canadian Deli" @ Maaßenstraße 14 / U-Bahnhof Nollendorfplatz...schweet...

Whenever we feel the need to clog our arteries, usually after a particularly shitty day, we go to the currywurst place on Kudamm, west of Wittenburgplatz, set in off the street and under a big solarium. It must be near the kurfürstendamm ubhf? Not quite as good as Mehringdamm 36, but still very, very good, you can get little overpriced bottles of sekt with your currywurst and pommes. It does tend to hit the spot. We try not to go more than twice a year, calories, calories.

Do people actually drink Sekt with Currywurst? to me is sould discusting. Currywurst ist for when you are completly ratarsed and you think/know you need to have that 15th beer of the night to wash that Belin delicacy down;)

I guess New York Times represenatives/journalist havent actually sampled the Berlin Imbisses, if they have, they would have produced the article: "Berliners obviously have low quality and diet standards". I have yet to experience any quality, tastey or good imbiss food. Döners, currywurst, half cooked, oil soaked chips; MSG and chemical soaked Asian fast food; and/or dried out, overcooked meat is not exactly satisfying me. I do not like fast food to begin with, but I would rather have a Burger King or Subway, if I had to choose between the two. Otherwise, it is easy to obtain a snack ala fruit, baked goods from the phenominal German Bakeries and mulitple open air produce markets for a bit of nourishment.

However, the Pizza quality has risen in the past few years with more focussed pizza imbisses that specialize in fresh, home-made, "brick-oven" style pizzas. The fresh ingredients make the difference.

I had a very good burger all freshly cooked in Burgermeister. Ii is a little small imbiss direct infront of Schleisisches Tor U-bahn in Kreuzberg.

It is a little small place on a traffic island, it actually is a convert public toilet ohmy.gif

All food cooked to order so takes a little while but excellent quality. Hmmm I think I will go there tomorrow...

Address is :

Burgermeister

Oberbaumstraße

10997 Berlin

I was searching for a link but cannot find one...
expat_J
Is it a real Burger (beef not pork)? that sounds good. freshly cooked hamburgers...What Berlin needs more of.
Deccie
Yup, it is a real homemade beef burger. can add cheese, bacon and/or chilli.

Definitely a recommendation from me.
expat_J
Deccie you are da man!!! That sounds just like what the dr. ordered. Im looking on Google Earth and I see a small hut in the middle of the triangular island you spoke of directly north east of the train station. I am assuming that is the locale.

Great tip, mate.

Same here, I rather go to MacDonald's than buy anything from those street stands, yikes!

and if you are like me, going to Mickey D's or the BK Lounge is saying a lot, because I dont really appreciate that cuisine either. I hear ya! cheers on being healthy and stomach cramp free!!! wink.gif

I wouldn't say I'm exactly healthy to be honest but I don't fancy those green greasy sausages, those oil sticks they pass for chips (fries) and all those other 'snacks' they sell, I'm no fan of pork meat or lamb so sausages & kebabs are not high on my list, I do love chips but only the British/Belgian style ones.

Diane, Check out post 3.
Diane
Cheers, I live quite close by from that place and I've seen it, it didn't look too appetizing from the outside but I'll give it a try when I get the 'chip cravings' wink.gif
expat_J
what do you mean by the British/Belgian style chips? besides fresher oil... tongue.gif
Deccie
I think she mans that they are made from real potatoes and not the processed pureed McDonald type of fry.
Diane
Exactly! Made from real potatoes, thick cut, slightly crunchy on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside, you have to try chips from a proper Fish & Chips shop to notice the difference! tongue.gif
