Any other English-speakers near Lake Constance?

Any Brits, or other native English speakers, living around the Bodensee? We've been here for several years now near Überlingen - anyone else in this neck of the woods?

Boy, I guess I'll be booking a train ticket to London again ... sad.gif
Small Town Boy
What you up to in Überlingen anyway? I was there a couple of years ago while on holiday in the area. I remember there was a nice Obstbrennerei there, so we got tipsy trying out the different liquers, then headed down the road (by bus!) to that monastery/churchy thing.
Kay
Don't despair, people don't always put their location on their profile page.
There might be some more of them around, so don't give up! smile.gif

Edit: On second thoughts, there are probably quite a few English speakers across the border in Switzerland, around St. Gallen. Have you tried this forum? (I hope this suggestion won't be viewed as an anti-TT initiative or something unsure.gif .)
TJ :)
Hi KPR, not so fast on that train ticket! I live in the Bodensee area (only about 10 minutes from Überlingen actually), am not a Brit but an English speaker nevertheless. PM me if you feel like meeting up sometime smile.gif My husband's also an English speaker, so that makes 3 for the Bodensee area already.
KPR
Small Town Boy- Landed in the region gawd, 8 or 9 years ago, after living in British Columbia, and being recommended for jobs here by some old friends of ours. The big churchy thing would be Birnau. Never liked that Barock style very much myself. But the combination of mountains/lake/vineyards around here is hard to beat. Just, sometimes, a nice English pub wouldn't go amiss!
KPR
Kay - thanks for the link. Actually, I was wondering if Toytown ought to allocate a forum to the Bodensee itself - since it straddles Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Austria and Switzerland. We travel across to Switzerland/Austria far more often than up to Stuttgart or Munich.
KPR
TJ - great to hear from you! That'll be 4 of us then, my wife is English too. We'd be delighted to meet up - I'll send you a message soon. 10 mins from Überlingen - interesting - so are we - it would be funny if we were neighbours. We're not far from Lippertsreute ...

Hi KPR and TJ
Saw your posts and thought I'd let you know that there are a group of English-speaking ex-pats in the Lindau area. Not sure if that's a bit too far for you to contemplate travelling but we only meet once a month (the last Friday night) so you might want to consider it. We meet in a different venue each time (to keep things interesting) and you are welcome to contact me if you are interested.
Regards
Amanda
KPR
Amanda - Nice to know you're out there. Lindau's not so far. And of course, if there's interest, perhaps folks could meet at other venues along the lake too ..

Now that Editor Bob has newly created this Bodensee forum for our use, any chance you might regularly post details of your meet-ups so others in the area can see what's on too? (Saw your post for Friday 23rd March)

Have you heard of any other ex-pat groups around the Bodensee? TT would be a useful way of linking everybody together ...
Amanda Davies
Hi KPR

I know that there are ex-pat groups in Wangen (they meet in Hatzenweiler) and in Weiler-Simmerberg (more in the Allgau direction). In Lindau there's also the "English Club" which, although run by a couple of Englishmen, is more for Germans who want to practice their English. I suspect that there are groups in the Friedrichshafen area as there are so many foreigners working for MTU, Dornier and ZF, but I don't have any contact with anyone else.

I'd love to get a website set-up and get some posters printed for my group in Lindau, but at the moment the funds are non-existent! Maybe one day... In the meantime at least I can 'meet' others and make contacts through TT.

Keep in touch!
Marzi
Hi, yes, over here! We're here! Here being Salem, and we being me, Irish, my other half, Irish and our two daughters (11 and 8). Also desperate to make contact with other English-speakers in this area. Now if I'm counting the running totals correctly, that makes 7 of us (9 if you include our daughters, neither of whom were born in Ireland, but both of whom carry Irish passports!). Where in Überlingen are you?
TJ :)
Hi Marzi! Great, the Bodensee count is rising! We're in Mühlhofen (near Meersburg). We're meeting up for the first time this Saturday in Überlingen (11 am, at the atrium behind the Krone in Münster Straße), hope you can join us. We consists (so far smile.gif ) of me, my husband, KPR and KPRs wife.
KPR
Marzi, good to hear from you! Salem is just a short bike ride away.
Hope you can make it on Saturday. Maybe we can get an English-speaking Stammtisch going ...
shalom
i am in lindau, where is the next gathering place ?
TJ :)
Hi Shalom! We're meeting this Saturday (today) in Überlingen (11 am, meeting point is the atrium behind the Krone in Münsterstraße), hope you can make it!
Marzi
Hi All in Überlingen, Mühlhofen and Lindau!
Sorry we couldn't join you this morning for the meeting in Überlingen - we would have really liked to have been there, but we had other previous arrangements which meant we couldn't make it this time sad.gif . Hope it went well and that you're planning to get together again soon, as we'd love to get the chance to meet up with you all. So let us know when and where and we'll try and be there!
California Friend
Hi there
I am from California and lived in Immenstaad for about ten years. You need to try there for finding English speaking people. In Immenstaad there is an English Round Table that meets the second Monday of each month at the Schiff Restaurant. Call the Restaurant for information and ask to speak to Bob - he is British. Also, most members of this round table belong to a group that puts on English plays. Lots of people there for you to talk to. Many activities. If you privately Pm me, I will give you a name for a contact point.

California Friend.

Hi, I've just started work at EADS in Immenstaad, but I don't know anybody in the area and my German is rubbish. I'd really appreciate any info about social stuff going on around here. Cheers.

Hi, I will be moving to Ueberlingen in January and also would love to know about any social gatherings in the Bodensee area!
ahenric
Hi, there are a lot of English-speaking families around Immenstaad too, and quite a few other English speakers at EADS who meet for lunch (can introduce you if you like). It depends what your interests are: playdates and meetups for the wife and kids (lots of those), or all night partying! A good bet is also the various clubs (Vereine) from Dornier/EADS or Immenstaad (sailing, soccer, volleyball etc).
Twiga
Hi ahenric, an intro to other English speakers at EADS would be much appreciated. Please let me know when/where you meet for lunch.

Hi ppl, what;s there to be done on weekends here at Radolfzell? Any suggestions ? Plan to drive down to Venice/Paris maybe...anyone interested to follow?
Lorrie
Hi there,

I came to Germany in 1999 for a six month visit and I´m still here. Before coming to Germany I worked as an environmental scientist and now I teach English. I appreciate what´s good here but I do miss somethings that are determined by language fluency- a good philosophical discussion for example. Learning German in Swabia- its like going to Glasgow to learn English. I have a son who is six and it would be great to find a few interesting fun mums.

My husband (born in Stuttgart) is mad about paragliding and all things outdoors; its knackering but it keeps me slim. I´m into singing, playing my guitar, and having a nice chat over a pint.

I´m about 10km from the lake at the moment but will be moving to LA (Langenargen) in the spring. Anyway, I´d like to meet up with some others.

Lorrie

For those at the northern end of the lake (Überlingen, Konstanz, Radolfzell, etc.) is there any interest any getting together every so often? Once a month or so? We tried this earlier this year, but what with holidays, etc., didn't reach critical mass. My wife and I have been here for over 10 years now, and will continue to be. So we'd be happy to meet up with others in the area ...
LinaEve
Hi!

I just moved to Konstanz and it would be great to meet of with some new faces. I come from Finland but in the last few years been living in Germany, Australia and Ireland. But if you want to go for a cup of coffee then just let me know smile.gif

Hiya gang

Haven't posted for quite a while...too much to do and too little time...unsure.gif

However, I thought I'd let you all know that the Lindau Ex-Pats still meet on the last Friday night of each month, always from 8pm, but at a different venue each time (keeps things interesting). There's about 100 of us in the Lindau area...from mid 20's to retired age...with the majority being around the mid 30/mid 40 mark. All corners of the globe are represented...UK, Ireland, Malta, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, India, Australia, South Africa, Canada and the States...so it's sometimes like being at the United Nations.

We're not really interested in changing the world, but just enjoy having a laugh over a few drinks, with the odd bout of drunken Irish dancing thrown into the mix and the obligatory get togethers for events of national importance (ie. football, Rugby, etc.).

Let me know if you're interested. I'll try and post our get-togethers more regularly on this site, but I do tend to forget.

Amanda

Hi, I´m from UK and live in Konstanz. I have 2 kids aged 3 and 5, and a German husband. Would love to meet up with more people from UK.
KPR
Hmmm ... looks like we have a few people now at the western end of the lake. LinaEve, JKC001, RacingRao, Alan2, Lorrie (and anyone else around here) would you like to meet up in Konstanz or Überlingen in the next couple of weeks to get together for a chat and a drink somewhere?
JKC001
I could meet up next week. After that I am in UK until mid March.
KPR
I have to go to the university library in Konstanz next week anyway, so perhaps we can meet on Wednesday or Thursday afternoon for a coffee. If not, we too are away in France for the 2nd half of March, so we can try again in April ...
Shakey
I am here working at EADS in Immenstaad and we have a group of english speaking people who like to go out for meals and a few beers or glasses of wine. We are looking for other people to join us for some laughs. If your interested, let us know.

Cheers
