Hi

I am from South Africa and am considering a move to Germany this year. I have a young child and would like to know if anyone knows of any tutoring services offered to help the transition from an English speaking school to a German speaking one.

How old is the child?
There are plenty of private "Nachhilfe" outfits here
that will provide private tuition.
The Kindergarten and Grundschulen (primary schools)
are not geared up to English speaking children.
German rules here 100% - middle-class parents want
their kids to learn English early - but that is another matter.

I was 10 when I moved to Germany, I spoke no German when I started school (4th grade in primary school) here but after a few months I miraculously was really good, after a year I scored B´s on German exams :-)

Once a week I had one hour German class with a teacher from the school, but that was it. Was it hard? Yeah, sometimes, but I survived and it was a much better way to learn than sit around language books. Some subjects were more difficult than others, its normal that for a year or two the kids grades might change but nothing to be worried about. It all goes back to normal after a while

I'll go with that to. Just drop the kid in school and it will pickup real quick(not like us older buggers smile.gif )
