'Lo everyone,

Just thought I'd write a quick introductory note; I couldn't find a "Newcomer in Ulm" thread so I started a new one (I apologize if I'm treading on any moderator toes).

So, my wife and I are originally from South Africa - though I am Dutch by birthright - we've been living in Neu-Ulm, Bayern, for the last two years, we both have a reasonable grasp of the German language, though we speak Afrikaans at home. We have quite a few German friends, but to be honest sometimes we miss interaction with other English speaking folk, don't quite know why I haven't bothered till now to check whether there was an online english community in Germany, but I finally googled and was pleased to discover this forum.

My wife and I are in our late twenties (no kids yet, but thinking about it), I'm currently a freelance software developer on contract to a defense firm in South Africa, my wife is an English teacher and we live in a three story house about 300 meters from the Donau river, it's quite picturesque here and we haven't had reason yet to look back on our decision to emigrate.

Anyway, I'd like to get to know the people here at the forum, make some new friends, maybe even meet up for a beer or seven. So if you're in the Ulm/Stuttgart area and you like Hefeweisse, feel free to pm me.
Chis
Hi,

after googling onto the site I'd better introduce myself. English, 10 years in Ulm and until now totally unaware that the english speaking world wasn't a hop, skip and a flight away. Thirty something, curry cooking english guy (I've even found Naan bread in ulm! - Marktkauf in Söflingen) A beer and a chat with fellow expats would be most welcome...

'Sup Chis, were you from originally?

Hi Cixelsid,

bit complicated that, born in Yorkshire, grew up in London, studied in Sheffield spent a few years in the Lake District and have made Ulm home. What brought you guys so far from home? Watch the rugby yesterday?

Hi there,

My husband and I are South Africans, and we have been living in Stuttgart since January 2007. We are also Afrikaans from Pretoria. We would love to meet other South Africans. Please let me know when and where and we'll be there.

Lekker dag!

Seeing as next weekend is Easter is prob not such a good idea to make plans for then...

lets get something organised for the weekend after Easter then, either the 28th or the 29th.Being so new here i really dont know anywhere where we can meet up.

Any suggestions anyone?

P.S the rest of the SA people i live with are keen to come as well so we will be about 7 at least.

Look forward to meeting you all

Howzit!

Paul here! I'm also a Saffo from Durban living in ulm.

I can't do the 29th, maybe the 28th? In SA for April, but I'll be back in May should you guys still be around.
Look forward to meeting you all some time!
auntysarahjane
Yeah!! Hey guys!! Lets arrange to all meet up on Friday 28th March, eh?!! That sounds good.

I think that would be great, to suit everyone, as its WAY too short notice now to do it this weekend, and friends are away too...so lets do it the weekend after easter...probably be best all round. I will put up a new post on the Baden-Württemberg Events Calendar for that night, so keep your eyes peeled there everyone: English Speaking Meet Up in Ulm.Fri 28th March

And, I'll leave it open for suggestions as to where peeps think we should go?!! Think thats maybe a better idea.

It sounds like there'll be loads of us meeting up, so thats REALLY great!! It'll be really good to broaden our group to more people who meet up every once in a while. Always excellant to speak English with people every once in a while!?! lol

Hope to see people soon!!

Regard's, Sarah.

hiya,
I'm an Irish guy (that has been living in Vienna for nearly 5 years) and I've been sent on a long term work assignment to Ulm.
I stumbled across this forum today and am very happy to see that it is quite active.
I've been working Mon-Fri in Ulm and spending my weekends in Vienna for the past month. I've finally gotten the keys of my apartment and plan to be spending increasing amounts of time in Ulm.
I'm not sure if I can make the get together on Friday the 28th, but if I am in town I will certainly head along.
Otherwise I'd be on for meeting up the following weekend, or will make an appearance whenever the next meeting takes place

Looking forward to meeting with some of you soon,
all the best,
John

Welcome to Ulm John. Look forward to sharing a beer and putting the world to rights sometime soon.

Failing that we'll resort to plan B. Drinking too much, making fools of ourselves and suffering with a hangover the next day.

If anyone is interested, there's an impromptu meet up tonight (20/3) in Ulm at 21:00 in Stitz in Ulm. Feel free to come along and join is. Check out the post by Kym (caligirl) for more details and contact numbers.

Hello to all!

Aunty Sarah is doing what she does best - organizing get togethers. So head on over to English Speaking Meet Up in Ulm.Fri 28th March and lets figure out what we want to do, how and to whom!
Kalina
Hi everybody!
I am Kalina and with pleasure rolleyes.gif I would like to join the next meeting...
See you soon (I hope blink.gif )
Dublin_John
hi Everyone,

first off, thanks Jon for the welcome note.
I've just arrived back in Ulm and this coming weekend will be my first one of many to be spent here.
Are any of you planning to get together for a drink or a bite to eat one of the nights?

cheers,
John
JReast
Hi John,
Can do. Saturday would probably be best. I'll see if we can get Sam to join us again as we haven't seen her for sometime as well. How does 8pm Sat suit other people? After the sarcastic editing of the last post, I'd like to suggest that we leave it to the moderator to suggest which bar we meet in since they don't like us deferring where we meet up until we know what the weather is going to be like. If they can't come up with anything better how about Barfusser again. They do a great dark beer.
Dublin_John
hi Jon,
count me in.
Barfusser and good dark beer sounds good to me.
should we also grab a bite to eat there?
cheers,
John

Thanks lol. I tried to start a new topic but somehow it ended up here so now I have two posts lol. Don't know how that happened. I am not that desperate lol.

I would have replied - but I'm now about to leave Ulm in the next week or two. There are a few folk around who live in and around Ulm, but I only met up with them at a 6 nations rugby match a few months ago.

Keep your eyes peeled - they tend to arrange something every few months. I think in the time I've been here (6 months) they have arranged 2 or 3 outings.
Dublin_John
Hey Everybody,

I was just chatting with Neil and we decided to meet up on Thursday night to watch the Portugal V Germany match.
Given that Germany are playing it might be difficult to find a table, but we'll give it a go.
Wilder Mann, Kulisse, Zill all should have outdoor screens and are located beside one another, so we were thinking to head there at about 7.30pm.

anybody interested?
we're also open to alternative suggestions for a location

Cheers,
John
p.s. don't be put off in coming along if you are not a football fan, this is primarily just an excuse for meeting up!

Bill here from Geislingen which is about 35 minutes NW of Ulm (by car). I arrived 5 weeks ago without speaking a word of German but I´m very proud of the banner I put up on my desk, "Ich kann alles, außer Hochdeutsch"!

Although I´m a true blue Brit, I´ve spent most of my career in Italy. It would be great to meet up in the Ulm area and mazbe have dinner one evening?

Hello to all.

I've been in Ulm for a couple of days now and I have only happened upon one native English speaker, a Brit on Holiday. Are there any expat hangouts or groups around? For that matter, any expats around at all? I will only be in this week (week of 18 August) but I always enjoy the company of English-speakers espcially since my Deutsch is so rotten. smile.gif

Hey e-matt,

Most people are on holiday in August, if you don't mind a pair of South Africans we could go out for a beer sometime this week, p.m. me and we can work out the details. That pretty much goes for anybody on this forum, I'm always up for meeting new and interesting peoples!

I'm actually nearer to Memmingen than Ulm, but not afraid of the A7!

I'm British, and have been living here in Germany since 2001 (one year out to live in Vietnam).
I am self-employed as an English teacher / translator etc (surprise surprise) and I'm also a writer, when I get the chance.
I'm here on my own with my four year old son which has pretty much put a kaibosh on my social life. Now I've got a semi-willing babysitter, I'm ready to start up again.
I've always had loads of German friends here, but haven't really met any people from Blighty and it would be nice to catch up with other expats (from anywhere, I come from an international family!!) to chew the cud. smile.gif
