General advice about car registration in Saxony

And is it OK to drive on U.S. car insurance?

I'm lookin to move to Leipzig in June (July as far as the government knows =D) and I am bringing my love with me (2001 BMW 325i).

anyway, I'm pretty sure I can take care of the TÜV requirements before I leave, which I read is important to do. But my question's for anyone who's registered a car in Saxony (specifically Leipzig, but from what I read it doesn't make a difference).

basically anyone who's got some little tid-bit of information they can throw my way would be greatly appreciated. The biggest question on my lips currently though, is: Can I use my American Car insurance while I'm over there for registering my car, or do I have to German insurance? If temporarily works, then how about indefinitely having american insurance? If both are out of the question, what is recommended usually for car in insurance? Am I verpflichtet to notify German car insurance companies about my accident history in the States? (I figured there might be something to the word verpflichtet to explain why Germans use it so much so I decided to give it a try. not the same effect wink.gif )

anyway, I'm sure there are some answers already in this forum, I'm probably just not giving the proper search criteria. (I am currently looking through insurance and stuff in addition to posting this). If this would fair better in a not-just-saxony forum, please feel free mods to move it or whatever.

Thanks im voraus. =)

Just drive it illegally, and if you get pulled over just pretend to speak French.

With American plates? Sure, why not. =D
