Train of Commemoration shunted sideways

The Train of Commemoration is a rolling museum sponsored by various organizations such as the Federal Center of Political Education and the DGB, roof organization of the German unions. Its main topic is the deportation of Jews and how the Reichsbahn, predecessor of the Deutsche Bahn, was a willing Nazi tool. Stops are scheduled throughout Northern and Eastern Germany through April and the beginning of May.

But it seems that the train has reached a no-thoroughfare in Berlin. The Deutsche Bahn will not give permission for a stop at the Central Station, stating that the museum train would disrupt the daily schedule. Bahnhof Grunewald, one of the main departure points for transports east, mainly Auschwitz, is also out of the question, according to Deutsche Bahn, as the ominous track 17 is inaccessible due to a lack of public tracks. The organizers invited German and international media representatives to view the location and proved Deutsche Bahn wrong.

QUOTE

The organizers are losing their patience with Deutsche Bahn, calling its behavior regarding the hassle about track rental fees, standing fees and fire detectors “undignified and demanding that the federal government as owner of Deutsche Bahn calls it to order. Wolfgang Teifensee, German Minister of Transport, has instructed Deutsche Bahn to “assume a cooperative stance. True to its past, Deutsche Bahn is charging this train for services rendered and rental fees. Under the Nazis, the Reichsbahn charged four Pfenning per person and kilometer, children four to ten years paid half, younger children were free. A group fare was granted for 400 “passengers and more.

QUOTE

Interesting that DB are being so uncooperative, given that a couple of months ago their free ICE mag had a big feature about how all DB employees are sent on a training course to be fully aware of the role of the railways during the 3rd Reich.
On a personal note thats a big poo as Id like to go see it.
*EDIT* Having now looked at the top link- If it cant find a home in Berlin, it will still be at Potsdam later in April

DB are being on one level outrageous, no doubt about it.

But on the other hand, "everyone", from federal politicians to the drunken ranting TTer has been calling on the big corporations to be more market orientated.
How many more hundreds of millions of your money should have been spent to build a railway station with more platforms than were needed?

The train set off across Germany in November on an often tearful journey due to end, like so many of the Nazis' victims, at the notorious Auschwitz death camp in Poland. The society that devised the project aims to highlight the role of the German railways system in the Holocaust, touring Germany with the locomotive and two carriages containing photographs to represent thousands of child victims of the genocide.

Just to say, its in Berlin and it looks... surprising. Stupidly i hadnt realised that it would be a cutesy ThomasTheTankEngine type jolly old steam train that merrily chugged down the track to Auschwitz.
Its at Berlin Ostbahnhof.

While the DB remains a subsidized entity of the Federal Governement, I do not think the solution should soley fall on the desk of DB beaurocrats. Of all places where "never forget" reigns in the minds and hearts of all generations and citizens of a dark time in history, I think a closer, social conscious look warrants a closer examination.
