Grindel UFA-Palast is a large multiplex cinema in Hamburg. The cinema first opened in 1959. Then in 1994 the Grindel Ufa-Palast became Hamburg's first multiplex cinema, with six air-conditioned theatres.

UPDATE: This cinema closed for good in March 2008.

Every Monday at 8.15pm there is an English-language original version "sneak preview" showing of a forthcoming movie. Every Wednesday at 8.15pm is a German-language preview.

In the summer of 2001 the English-language "original version" showings moved from the smaller City theatre, which was about to be closed, to the Grindel, and from 2005 on, the Grindel had only English-language screenings, except for the children's programme. In October 2006, though, the Grindel returned to movies with German dubbing, according to the management due to the lack of sufficent demand. Since then, English-language blockbusters can only be seen on an irregular basis in a number of Hamburg cinemas, apart from the Grindel in the Abaton, Cinemaxx Dammtor, Studio, UCI Mundsburg and Zeise (see the related chat topics: Grindel cinema in Hamburg stops films in English and call for help with petition signing).

Even worse, since the UFA cinema chain, which operates the Grindel, filed for bankruptcy in 2002, the future of the Grindel is uncertain. Recent rumors claim that the Grindel will be closed 2007, just like its sister UFA-Palast Gänsemarkt in 2006.
